The current prototyping and sketching tool, Soma bits, is bulky and needs a station to work with. The tool also includes different parts and workshop method materials (work sheets) and they are all in different styles. Our goal is to reorganise the packaging of it, make it mobile, portable in a baggage, create a consistent visual identity for the prototyping kit and redesign the method materials in order to document the feeling experiences in a low-fi way.
We been asked to “pack” the soma bits (in their current status, adding low-fi McKibben muscle fibers to the mix) — soma bits is a prototyping and sketching tool to design interactive solutions for the body. In short we are to compile a set of one-bit, low-fi actuators that allow you to sketch with haptics into a bag, on wheels. We have:
- developed and designed low-fi intro kit to McKibben muscles
- new power setup to keep mobility in focus
- rebrand Soma Bits to the Haptic Bits Lab and create a range of visual aligning the full products
- developed a new trajectory sheet to document an experience mimicking MIDI
This kit is inspired by research conducted at Uppsala University, within the Department of Materials Science and the Microsystems Technology program, as well as at KTH in the Department of Media Technology and Interaction Design.
